ISTD Tap Examinations
Established in 1904 the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) is one of the world’s oldest and most influential dance examination boards. Tap dance is an American art form, born of the fusion of cultures on American soil. Influenced by African rhythms, Irish stepping and English clogging, it developed in the late 19th century and by the early 1900s was firmly established in the vaudeville of America and in the music halls of Britain. Its popularity spread even more widely in the 1930s when it became a significant component of musical films.
Students at Cheshire Dance Centre have the opportunity once a year to take a tap exam at their appropriate level. Examinations are optional but highly encouraged for students to gain a further sense of accomplishment and understanding of the tap fundamentals. All students learn the exam material in their regular classes throughout the year and progress through the ISTD syllabus whether or not they are taking an exam.
